Summer 2025
What a wonderful year we have had! First, at Christmas, Rutter’s Gloria, MacMillan’s, O Radiant Dawn and excerpts from Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio. Then in May, Haydn’s Creation accompanied by the amazing Shaldon Sinfonietta. I am sure you will agree with me that our soloists for the Creation, Josie Walledge, Jonathan Lucas-Wood and Tim Mirfin are quite superb and elevated the performance to a standard which would not be out of place in any of the top London concert halls. This of course is, all thanks to our marvellous Musical Director, Tim Crompton who has brought out the best in all of us and improved our singing skills to a new level!
I would also like to thank all those volunteers who help with stage setting, stewarding, refreshments, ensuring the church is comfortable for us , designing and printing the programs and posters , taking photos , introducing us in our concerts and carrying out all those other essential tasks with enthusiasm and competence. Our new committee has been great- full of new ideas and ably carrying out everything required in their area of responsibility.
We have tried to improve communication and participation within the choir. The refreshments are popular as is the Who’s Who which has allowed members to put names to faces- especially in other voice parts within the choir.
We have responded to a request made at last year’s AGM to review the uniform and after trying out many different combinations of bowties and scarves, I think the turquoise colour with black tops looks really classy and professional. I have had lots of feedback from both choir members, ( some of whom were initially rather reluctant to change) and from the audience saying how lovely we all looked! If any gentlemen have a penchant for bowtie wearing, I do have quite a collection on a musical theme which I could sell them at very competitive rates. All income going to choir funds.
Moving with the times, and trying to simplify the administration load, we decided to make the concert tickets available through TicketSource. The committee realise ,that for some people , change is difficult and having reviewed ticket sales, we have decided at the next concert to have some paper tickets available for sale from choir members while continuing to promote TicketSource as an on line platform. Payment will be by BACS transfer, credit/debit card and by cash.
I am delighted to tell you that our nominated Charity for the May concert- The Alice Cross Centre, raised £282.67 which will go towards upgrading the fire/smoke alarm system. Many thanks to Viv Wilson, local historian and long term supporter of Alice Cross Centre for giving such an inspiring talk.
We would like to ask choir members to nominate local charities as a beneficiaru for the December 25 and May 26 concerts. Please send your ideas to Polly Tarrant- secretary@shaldonsingers.co.uk.
Raising funds for the Choir.
Make money for Shaldon Singers!
Many charities receive money from their supporters by using the Easyfundraising App. All you need to do is download the app on to your phone or tablet, then register your name. You can then search for the store you want to buy from eg. Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencers- there are over 8000 stores registered with Easyfundraising. When you buy from your chosen store using the EF app, the store pays a percentage of the sale to your chosen charity. It does not cost you any more to do this , but could generate significant funds for the choir. For more information type Easy fundraising into your search box.
